Interleukin-4 (IL-4) is a cytokine primarily produced by mast cells, T-cells, eosinophils, and basophils, playing a crucial role in the differentiation of naive helper T cells (Th0) into Th2 cells, which then produce more IL-4 in a positive feedback loop. IL-4 regulates antibody production, enhances the expression of class II MHC molecules on B-cells, and promotes IgE and IgG1 secretion. It signals through two receptor complexes, leading to the activation of JAK3 and STAT6, and also plays roles in autophagy in dendritic cells and higher cognitive functions in the brain, such as memory and learning.
