A cytokine that acts as a growth factor for activated T and natural killer (NK) cells, enhancing their lytic activity and stimulating interferon-gamma production in resting peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). IL-12B heterodimerizes with IL-23A to form IL-23, which plays a role in both innate and adaptive immunity. IL-23 targets a receptor complex made of IL12RB1 and IL23R, activating the Jak-Stat signaling pathway. It preferentially stimulates memory T-cells, promoting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. IL-23 is implicated in autoimmune inflammation and may contribute to autoimmune diseases and tumorigenesis.
